Big Idea Sci Fi: The Left Hand of Darkness

For this week’s reading, I dove into The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin. This week's reading was a little more immersive in its contexts. I felt like the novel discussed a lot about common things that our society today, is in the middle of. This novel takes place during the journey of Genly Ai as he goes to other nations in search of others to join the Ekumen. Throughout this you get to experience different walks of life, and you learn to slowly understand different cultures through the different types of Gethenians. This has represented life for us, in the way that even on this Gethenian planet, there were different geographical locations with their own traits, just like our different cultures throughout countries and what not. Very similar to relife, and very relevant. I feel as if the problems throughout each nation / country is the fear of understanding each other, which is why I think this ties into present day so much. I believe that within our world there are many different types of people, and no one group is fully willing to accept anyone from any other group. I believe even within countries there is still this weird, off brand hate, directed toward anyone who doesnt share the exact same values as them. I think this books brings up good points on these matters and believe those who discover it should reflect from it.
